Easy Banana Foster Recipe – A Delicious Dessert

Banana Foster is a classic New Orleans dessert featuring ripe bananas caramelized in a buttery, spiced rum sauce. This indulgent treat is typically served over vanilla ice cream and makes for an impressive yet simple dessert. Its warm, rich flavors with a hint of cinnamon make it a favorite for special occasions or an elevated end to any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced lengthwise
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup dark rum
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  • Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir until it dissolves, creating a smooth caramel sauce.
  • Add the Cinnamon and Bananas:
    • Sprinkle the cinnamon over the sauce and gently stir. Add the banana slices, cut side down, and cook for 1–2 minutes on each side, until they begin to soften but maintain their shape.
  • Flambé the Rum (Optional):
    • Reduce the heat to low and carefully add the rum. If desired, use a long lighter or match to ignite the alcohol. Allow the flames to subside naturally as the alcohol burns off. (Skip this step if you prefer not to flambé.)
  • Add Vanilla:
    • Stir in the vanilla extract and gently coat the bananas in the sauce.
  • Serve Immediately:
    • Spoon the warm bananas and sauce over scoops of vanilla ice cream. Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the rum with apple juice or water.
  • Use firm, ripe bananas for the best results; overripe bananas may become too mushy.
  • To elevate the dish further, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the top before serving.
